Catalytic Activated Carbon

$11.99 - $84.99

Catalytic Activated Carbon (CAC) is a high-performance carbon used for aggressive DOC reduction without the heavy trace element stripping commonly seen with many traditional carbons and scavenging media.

Widely trusted in the Reef Moonshiners community, this CAC is known for delivering cleaner water, strong polishing, and long-lasting performance while having less impact on trace elements than many standard carbon options. That matters in reef systems where stability, balance, and coral response are everything.

Why It Hits Hard
Strong DOC reduction
Improves water clarity
Has less impact on trace elements than many traditional carbons
Typically effective for 3–4 weeks
Best used passively in a mesh bag
Trusted by reef keepers who want cleaner water without over-stripping the system
Recommended Use

Use 300 mL per 100 gallons of system water.

Place the carbon in a fine mesh media bag, rinse well under tap water, and place it in a high-flow area of the sump, ideally after the skimmer section.

This product is intended for passive filtration, not reactor use.

Monitoring and Replacement

For reef keepers using Reef Moonshiners ICP-MS testing, SAC254 values can be used to help track dissolved organics and determine when replacement is needed.

Replace or remove the carbon as needed based on system demand and nutrient goals.

Why Passive Use Matters

Using CAC in a reactor can increase the risk of clogging, channeling, decomposition, and unwanted leaching. Passive use in a mesh bag allows for better oxygen exposure, steadier flow, and more consistent performance.

Why It Stands Out

This is not generic carbon. It is a reef-focused option for hobbyists who want serious water polishing and DOC control without hammering trace elements the way many standard carbons can.
